Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

September is ovarian cancer awareness month and I would like to share the story of how we found out how our mother Glendra Raymond had ovarian cancer.

In July 2015 my mother was on her way from her home in Marshall, Texas to Dallas, Texas to pick up her youngest grandson to spend the summer with her. However on her way there she was in a accident, she and her friend were able to walk away from the accident but she would begin to experience pressure in her pelvis and pain in her lower back that would cause her such pain that she began using a cane. Within a month or so of the accident she was back and forth to the doctor but they were just prescribing pain medication to help her deal but then she noticed her abdominal bloating getting out of hand it was so bad that it promoted her to call her eldest daughter who is a nurse. After explaining all her symptoms to her daughter she was told to go to the emergency room not in Marshall, Texas but in Longview, Texas and that is when we found out it was ovarian cancer.

Nothing could have prepared us for those words “momma has ovarian cancer” and then later to find out it is a form of neuroendocrine tumor cancer and there was nothing else would could do for her but to wait for her to leave us. So I just want you all to know how important it is for you to listen to your bodies and not to listen to what the doctors say. If you feel that something isn’t right go to another doctor until you feel you get the right answers. If you notice a change or feel any of the symptoms listed below for more than a few weeks please contact your doctor for a check up.

Common symptoms that often mimic common stomach and digestive issues:

  • Abdominal bloating, indigestion or nausea
  • Changes in appetite, such as a loss of appetite or feeling full sooner
  • Pressure in the pelvis or lower back
  • A more frequent or urgent need to urinate and/or constipation
  • Changes in bowel movements
  • Increased abdominal girth
  • Tiredness or low energy
  • Changes in menstruation
