There are several patterns available on the internet that can be used to create your handmade items. For example a great website for sewn, crocheted and knitted chemo hat patterns is headhuggers.org another great site with good knit and crochet patterns is knotsoflove.org there are many other great sites available that provide great ideas for handmade items to donate for this cause. We will continue to research more sites and update the site once we have come up with a good list. Please remember to follow the donation guidelines when creating your items.
Glendra’s Love will accept any type of handmade items because our goal is to provide items that will offer loving warmth to those individuals taking treatments for cancer. Glendra’s Love will happily accept sewn items, small pillows, scarves, prayer shawls, lap blankets, gloves, socks, etc. If you have any question regarding the items we accept, please contact Glendra’s Love at glendraslove@gmail.com.
We suggest that you use 100% cotton, silk, soft acrylic, fleece or blend is good. We DO NOT recommend using wool or animal hair like alpaca because many chemo patients are allergic to fur and wool can make their tender heads itch.
Due to the chemo treatments many patients can have very sensitive skin and detergents which contact fragrance and dyes can cause irritation to their scalp. So we feel that it is best NOT to wash the items as long as they have been kept clean while making them. If you feel the need to wash the item, we suggest that the best detergents are to use are labeled “allergen free,” “unscented” or as as a “clear” liquid.
Glendra’s Love is an organization whose focus is on ovarian cancer and neuroendocrine tumor cancer which colors are teal and zebra stripe. However, if you are interested in sending items focusing on other types of cancer awareness we will happily accept them you can find a is a list of cancer awareness ribbon colors here: http://awarenessribbongifts.com/awareness-ribbon-colors/.
All items that are received by Glendra’s Love are donated to cancer centers and hospitals at no cost. If you are currently or will soon be taking treatments for cancer, please let us know what oncology clinic, cancer center, or hospital you will be attending and we will see what we can do. We are looking forward to expanding our services and would gladly donate to other facilities. Our mission is to provide loving warmth to men, women, and children who are going through chemotherapy so we would never charge anyone for a cap.
